400 vs 1,000 vs 1,600 Nits: Choosing HDR Logo Brightness

Use 400 nits for a restrained lift, 1,000 nits as the best general starting point, and 1,600 nits when a small white mark needs stronger impact. The display maps the encoded peak to its available HDR headroom.

What a nit setting controls

A nit is one candela per square metre, a unit of luminance. In a PQ workflow, the converter maps selected source values toward a chosen encoded peak. The screen then renders or tone-maps that request according to its own peak capability, window size, thermal state, and power settings.

When to use each level

At 400 nits, the effect can feel like a polished lift rather than a stunt. At 1,000 nits, a compact white mark should read clearly above ordinary UI white on many capable displays. At 1,600 nits, the difference is stronger, but larger bright areas may trigger more aggressive display limiting or simply feel harsh.

Composition matters more than the maximum

A small bright wordmark on a dark field can look more luminous than a full white frame at a higher encoded peak. Displays often reduce output when a large portion of the screen is bright, and viewers perceive contrast locally. Preserve dark space and raise only the pixels that need emphasis.

A practical test protocol

Begin at 1,000 nits. Compare the export on an HDR phone and laptop, then inspect the SDR fallback. Move down to 400 if the mark feels aggressive or the background lifts. Move up to 1,600 only if the highlight is small and the design still looks deliberate.

Frequently asked questions

Is 1,600 nits always brighter than 1,000 nits?

Not necessarily. A display may tone-map both values to the same peak or reduce output for larger bright areas.

Can high nit values damage a screen?

The display controls its own output limits, but extreme highlights can be uncomfortable. Use restraint and avoid large flashing areas.

What level should I choose first?

Start at 1,000 nits, then compare the HDR result and SDR fallback on the devices that matter to your audience.
